Voter initiatives, proposed income tax made for busiest week so far

Dear Neighbors,

I’ll briefly follow up my video report with some extra detail about Senate Bill 6346, which would create an income tax in our state. Even though it’s the most significant tax legislation anyone has seen in our state in decades, the hearing in our Senate Ways and Means Committee was scheduled just two days after the bill was introduced instead of the minimum five days required by Senate rules.

Despite the inexplicably short notice given to the public, more than 60,000 people went online and signed in as CON on the bill prior to the hearing. By that measure it’s the least popular Senate bill ever. I was disappointed that the committee chair shut down the hearing a few minutes past the two-hour mark, because that left out many of the 145 people who had asked to testify either for or against the bill. Those who did get called upon got cut off after just one minute anyway.

Click here to view the TVW coverage of the bill’s hearing. I’ll keep you posted.

I was pleased to sponsor Rosalie Ross as a Senate page during the third week of our session. She is the 14-year-old daughter of Kelsey and Kenneth Ross of West Richland, where she attends Enterprise Middle School. Thanks, Rosalie, for your service to the Legislature — I hope you had a great week!
